L‘armée tchadienne a annoncé à la télévision d’État, mardi 20 avril, la mort du président Idriss Déby, tout juste réélu à la tête du Tchad.
“Le président de la république, chef de l’Etat, chef suprême des armées, Idriss Déby Itno, vient de connaître son dernier souffle en défendant l’intégrité territoriale sur le champ de bataille. C’est avec une profonde amertume que nous annonçons au peuple tchadien le décès ce mardi 20 avril 2021 du maréchal du Tchad”, a annoncé le porte-parole de l’armée, le général Azem Bermandoa Agouna, dans un communiqué lu à l’antenne de TV Tchad.
Âgé de 68 ans, il était le tout-puissant chef d’État du Tchad depuis son coup d’État le 2 décembre 1990, qu’il avait fomenté avec l’aide de la France.
Militaire dans l’âme, «IDI», qui ne rechigne jamais à enfiler son treillis, est mort sur le front, face aux rebelles qui depuis des années remettent en cause son pouvoir.
Celui qui dirigeait le pays depuis 30 ans avait été réélu pour un sixième mandat avec 79,32 % des suffrages exprimés, selon des résultats officiels énoncés lundi dernier.
