Le représentant du Haut commissariat des Nations Unies pour les réfugiés (HCR) en Algérie, Agostino Mulas a rappelé, dimanche à Alger, le rôle “important” et “historique” de l’Algérie dans l’accueil et l’assistance des réfugiés.
“Au nom du HCR, je remercie l’Algérie pour le bon accueil qu’elle a toujours réservé aux réfugiés”, a indiqué M. Mulas à l’ouverture d’une manifestation à l’occasion de la Journée internationale des réfugiés réclamés le 20 juin de chaque année.
“L’Algérie a un long et riche parcours historique en matière d’accueil et d’aide aux réfugiés et ce depuis des siècles, et cette démarche ne concerne pas uniquement les réfugiés du Sud (Afrique subsaharienne), mais aussi ceux de l’ Europe, de l’Amérique latine, du Moyen-Orient et autres”, at-il ajouté.
Le représentant du HCR a estimé que cette Journée “est une occasion pour célébrer le courage, la force et les contributions de millions de personnes de par le monde contraintes de quitter leur pays à cause de violence, des guerres et des persécutions”, précisant que le nombre de réfugiés “a dépassé les 100 millions pour la première fois”, et cela est inadmissible”, a-t-il dit.
Concernant la situation des réfugiés sahraouis en Algérie, M. Mulas a souligné que “ces derniers mois, malheureusement, il y a eu moins d’assistance et de soutien en termes de fourniture d’aide alimentaire internationale, en raison de la conjoncture politique actuelle dans le monde et de la hausse des prix des céréales…”, appelant “la communauté internationale et l’ONU à poursuivre le soutien aux réfugiés sahraouis…”.
Il a en outre indiqué que “l’enjeu n’est pas lié uniquement aux conditions des réfugiés sahraouis, mais de tous les réfugiés dans les différentes régions du monde qui connaissent des crises”.
Pour sa part, l’ambassadeur de la République Arabe Sahraouie Démocratique en Algérie, Abdelkader Taleb Omar a déclaré que les réfugiés sahraouis comptent parmi les anciens réfugiés dans le monde et sont aussi les plus organisés de par leurs systèmes sanitaire, éducatif, administratif, judiciaire et autres”.
“La Communauté internationale reconnaît leur droit à la décolonisation et à l’autodétermination, toutefois l’ONU n’est pas parvenue à organiser le référendum…”, appelant à trouver une solution politique au problème et à mettre fin à l’impasse et à la prolongation du conflit en tenant la partie marocaine pour responsable , a-t-il ajouté.
Les participants à cette célébration, organisée par le Haut Commissariat aux Réfugiés (HCR) en Algérie, ont souligné la nécessité d’assister les réfugiés à traverser le monde face aux crises politiques et économiques actuelles, mettant en exergue la question des réfugiés sahraouis et la lutte du peuple sahraoui pour son indépendance.
