L’Indonésie s’est réveillée dimanche endeuillée par l’une des pires tragédies jamais survenues dans un stade.
Le bilan du mouvement de foule survenu après un match de football en Indonésie est passé à 174 morts, ont annoncé les autorités locales dimanche, ce qui en fait l’une des pires tragédies dans un stade à ce jour.
“À 9H30 (locales 02H30 GMT) le bilan est passé à 158 morts, et à 10H30 à 174 morts. Ce sont les données collectées par l’agence de gestion des catastrophes de Java Est”, a indiqué le vice-gouverneur de la province Emil Dardak sur la chaîne de télévision Kompas TV.
Le drame, qui s’est déroulé samedi soir dans la ville de Malang, à l’est de l’île de Java, a aussi fait quelque 180 blessées dans cet archipel d’Asie du Sud-Est où les rivalités entre supporters virent souvent à la catastrophe.
Des supporters de l’équipe du Arema FC ont pénétré sur le terrain du stade Kanjuruhan, dans la ville de Malang, après la défaite de leur équipe 3 à 2 contre celle de Persebaya Surabaya.
La police, qui a qualifié cet incident d'”émeutes“, a tenté de persuader les fans de regagner les gradins et a tiré des gaz lacrymogènes après la mort de deux policiers. De nombreuses victimes ont été piétinées mortellement.
Des survivants ont décrit des spectateurs pris de panique, bloqués par la foule, quand la police a lancé des gaz lacrymogènes.
Un spectacle désolant devant le stade témoignait dimanche matin des agitations de la veille : des véhicules calcinés, dont un camion de police, jonchaient les rues. La police a fait état de 13 véhicules brûlés.
Le président indonésien, Joko Widodo, a ordonné dimanche « une évaluation complète des matchs de football et des procédures de sécurité », après cet incident. Il a demandé à l’Association nationale du football de suspendre tous les matchs jusqu’à des « améliorations de la sécurité ». « Je regrette profondément cette tragédie et j’espère (qu’elle) sera la dernière dans notre pays », a-t-il ajouté dans un discours télévisé.
Une des victimes n’avait que cinq ans
Des images capturées à l’intérieur du stade montrent une énorme quantité de gaz lacrymogène et des personnes s’agrippant aux barrières, tentant de s’échapper. D’autres portaient des spectateurs blessés, se frayant un chemin à travers le chaos.
Le directeur d’un hôpital a indiqué sur une chaîne de télévision locale qu’une des victimes n’avait que cinq ans.
Le stade contenait 42.000 personnes et était au complet selon les autorités. Quelque 3.000 d’entre eux ont envahi le terrain en signe de colère après le match.
Le gouvernement indonésien a présenté ses excuses pour cet incident. Mea culpa aussi du côté de l’Association de Football d’Indonésie (PSSI), qui a suspendu tous les matches prévus cette semaine.
