L’Algérie a été brillamment élue, mardi, en tant que membre du Conseil des droits de l’Homme (CDH) des Nations unies pour la période 2023-2025, en reconnaissance à son rôle de pays pivot dans sa région, soucieux de promouvoir les principes et valeurs des droits de l’Homme dans le monde.
L’Algérie a récolté 178 voix au cours du scrutin qui s’est déroulé à New York lors de la 17e séance plénière de l’Assemblée générale de l’ONU, et à l’issue duquel 14 nouveaux pays rejoindront cet organe intergouvernemental du système onusien chargé de renforcer la promotion et la protection des droits de l’Homme dans le monde, faire face à des situations de violations des droits de l’Homme et formuler des recommandations à leur sujet.
Cet organe onusien est composé de 47 membres élus pour un mandat de trois ans, selon une répartition géographique qui donne 13 sièges aux Etats africains, 13 sièges également aux Etats d’Asie-Pacifique, 8 sièges aux Etats d’Amérique latine et des Caraïbes, 7 sièges aux Etats d’Europe occidentale et autres et 6 sièges aux Etats d’Europe de l’Est.
L’accession de l’Algérie au CDH, à partir du 1er janvier 2023 pour la 3e fois depuis la création de cet organe en 2006, lui permettra non seulement d’œuvrer à la promotion et à la protection des droits de l’Homme à travers le monde mais aussi de confirmer la place qui est la sienne au concert des nations et confortera sa candidature pour un siège de membre non permanent au Conseil de sécurité de l’ONU pour la période 2024-2025 dont les élections se tiendront en juin 2023.
