La chaleur extrême, avec ses températures diurnes et nocturnes dangereusement élevées, affecte des millions de personnes dans le monde, alerte l’Organisation Météorologique Mondiale (OMM), jeudi, soulignant l’importance des alertes précoces et des plans d’action sanitaires contre la chaleur.
L’OMM et ses Membres s’engagent donc à renforcer les systèmes d’alerte précoce contre la chaleur, conformément à l’ initiative “Alertes précoces pour tous”, et collaborent avec des partenaires aux niveaux international, national et communautaire pour consolider les plans d’action chaleur-santé.
“La chaleur extrême est parfois qualifiée de tueur silencieux, mais grâce aux connaissances scientifiques, aux données et aux technologies actuelles, le silence n’est plus une excuse. Chaque décès dû à la chaleur extrême est évitable”, a indiqué le Secrétaire général adjoint de l’OMM, Ko Barrett.
Les estimations modélisées montrent qu’entre 2000 et 2019, environ 489.000 décès liés à la chaleur, dont 45 % en Asie et 36 % en Europe, sont survenus chaque année. A l’échelle mondiale, le diagnostic et la déclaration officiels des maladies, blessures et décès liés à la chaleur sont reconnus comme étant sous-estimés.
En ville, l’impact de la chaleur sur la santé humaine est plus prononcé en raison de l’effet d’îlot de chaleur urbain. Les personnes âgées et celles souffrant de maladies chroniques sont plus exposées. Selon le service Copernicus de l’Union Européenne (UE) sur le changement climatique, juillet 2025 a été le troisième mois de juillet le plus chaud au monde (après juillet 2023 et 2024). La température moyenne de la surface de la mer a également été la troisième plus élevée jamais enregistrée.
La chaleur extrême a alimenté des incendies de forêt dévastateurs, faisant des victimes et détériorant la qualité de l’air. Selon les estimations de l’Organisation Mondiale de la Santé (OMS) et de l’OMM, le renforcement mondial des systèmes d’alerte sanitaire en cas de chaleur dans 57 pays seulement pourrait permettre de sauver environ 98.314 vies par an.
